This morning at church I noticed a young lady both singing and signing (as in 'for the deaf') the words of the songs we were singing. I watched her and got the sense that her ability to 'connect' in worship was enhanced by involving more of herself than just staring at the words and mouthing them. She was engaging her mind, body, soul and spirit. For quite some time I have found in my music a place to "find" God; that is, not just in the lyrics (although they certainly lead me to a worshipful condition of the heart,) but in feeling my way through cadence, rhythm, intensity, and all that comes through the instrument. Worship is a whole body experience - it is not singing songs. Sometimes it is found in closing your eyes and not just listening to the lyrics and music, but in hearing the expression in the voices around you cry out to God/expressing their own hearts and allowing that to lead you along your own path. Sometimes it is in tuning out all of the distractions around you and staring out the window at His creation - it too declares His glory. We have 5 physical senses; in worship allow touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell each to be used to engage your 6th sense - the sense of your Spirit, God's Holy Spirit alive and working within you and receiving all of who you are in worship.
