Most us are familiar with the teaching of God's omnipresence. It speaks to His immensity. But I all too often think of that in terms of God being a composite being, put together in parts which include mercy, compassion, wrath, love, provision...Kind of like you find Him in His mercy in one setting, but in another you find Him in His anger - bits and pieces spread all over creation. To take me a step beyond that idea I prefer to consider God's ubiquity. That word comes from the Latin "ubi" which means 'where', and the root of 'equity', or equal. Combined it speaks to God being equally everywhere. That is, the totality of God is equally everywhere. He comes to us fully, in all of the characteristics we conger up, and those beyond our limited imaginations, in every place, setting, circumstance and moment of every day. We subdivide God in our minds, but He offers us the entirety of His presence. That's both enticing and a bit frieghtening. In Jeremiah 23:23,24 God says "Am I only a God nearby, and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him? Do not I fill heaven and earth?" And He has done that for all of time. That pretty much puts a humbling touch on our perceived ability to shock Him with either our attitudes, behaviors or doubts. He can handle it, and minister to them as well. But it also puts conviction on our walking our own path - or so we think - apart from His presence until we get back in the mood to 'seek Him.' What arrogance to believe that I can turn my back on a ubiquitous God. What impertinence. What ingratitude. Hmmm...'gratitude' - from the word "Grace." That the outpouring of His ubiquity would be the offering of His unmerited favor, despite me. selah.
