Yesterday in the theology discussion we briefly got into some 'angels on the head of a pin' talk about literal '6 days' of creation, evolution, where science fits into all of that, and the like. I didn't want to prolong that because my sense was that our real focus in yesterday's class was the nature of the relationship God wanted to develop with us, which He began at creation. On the science/Bible topic I did have one thought that I'd like to toss out now that it won't derail the 'relationship' train of thought. That is, science and the Bible are answering two different questions. One looks at Who and why, the other looks at how. We misuse Holy Scripture when we try to use it to teach a physics course, and we assume god-like status when we try to annul God through science. I believe that science confirms God. In addition, there must be some initial conditions before science can begin to explain anything. Laws of science have to have something from which to start - some things which must be in place before science can begin to explain the laws of nature. God provided those initial conditions - now man can explore those mysteries and try to answer how His creation has developed. That search is physical/our relationship with God isn't touched by that, except that as we learn more of the immensity, intricacy and interrelatedness of His creation, we can more deeply appreciate the mystery of a personal relationship with such a Creator.
