I don't know whether or not the Book of Daniel is fair or unfair, because I just haven't seen it, not even part of it. But I doubt it's a good use of your time (or a good exercise of your Christian faith) to protest a show you haven't even seen.

Watch the show before you diss it or--if you suspect the show sucks--just find something better to do with your time ;-)

Take care, Dave...

Jeff just heard and interview on KXCI with the writer or producer or something or other of this show. It does seem to be pretty controversial. We will probably be watching it soon just out of curiosity. Hopefully it won't kill us. I have high hopes since we're not cats. I'll try to post our review of the show later. Well, our review of watching one show anyway.

I'm always ambivalent about shows or books that directly portray Divine characters. While I think that telling stories is one way of "thinking about" things...they can also powerfully shape us. So I watch my kids playing pretend games. That's their way of telling/acting out stories of life. I always have to look away when they are playing "mom & baby". The "baby" has a great time being the brattiest, spoiled, whiney creature you've ever seen! The "mom" is running around being a slave to the child and the child is abusive to the mother. Or sometimes the mother takes on the abusive role. So the mother will say "I'm going to buy food so I'm locking you in the closet." And the child is very emotional but this time you kinda agree that its a good reason to cry.

But sometimes I have to interfere with imaginary stuff because I can't stand it. So my kids ended up with a Halo X-box game. I don;t mind the random killing of alien creatures (although I know it promotes us against them). I also don't mind the fake blood (they still tremble at the sight of blood on real scrapes) I don't even mind the swearing (sorry - you still get grounded if you say it to real people). But I CAN'T STAND SHOOTING YOUR OWN MEN TO UPGRADE YOUR WEAPONS! Can I be more clear about this? I don't care if its just a computer game. Its a story and I will not tolerate shooting of your own men! I banned the game for several months for that reason. The kids are probably getting some mixed message about how the computer blood is fake enough for me but killing your own men crosses some unseen line for me.

I wonder if "The Book of Daniel" will cross any of my unseen boundaries? We'll see.

Well it's too late: "The Book of Daniel" was taken off the broadcast waves of TV land! Apparently the sponsors decided to pull support of it or the producers were discouraged due to lots of complaints. I actually haven't tried to watch it again so don't know for sure, just going with what Don Wildmon's group reported. I think it was airing on Friday nights. I watched it once and didn't think it was that bad. I only wrote that email because a friend forwarded me a message from DW's group (AFA) which I read and then shortly afterward happened to tune in to the show near the beginning of the episode. They were encouraging letters to the sponsors. The two companies I wrote to weren't accepting emails from the AFA site, and only one of them got my message from Yahoo! email... the other came back as a "daemon mailer" or whatever it's called.
I'm with you on the killing of your own men though, Emily. I watched "Die Hard with a Vengance" and couldn't stand when the CIA agent killed the cook after eating the best pork dish in the world just "to keep things equal" or some trivial reason. This isn't "your own men" per se but nevertheless killing of an innocent human for entertainment is to me absolutely dispicable, and it encourages others (who have poor moral upbringing) to do the same. This just makes me so angry. It reminds me of why I don't watch much TV.
