I'm not sure what you mean by "appreciating" run-on sentences but once you have spent many hours of your life trying to decipher developing writers' thoughts which run the gamut of completely unmixed to mixed but raw to half-baked to fully baked you will understand the point of the writing conventions, it is impossible to fully appreciate the message if the messager cannot be readily understood, in this analogy the message is the content, the messager is the structure and mechanics of the writing and from my experience it occurs to me that a poorly edited piece of writing when intended to be sent to an audience (reader) is at best a less effective piece of writing and at worst it is frustrating, you want to "shoot the messager," it is a self-centered piece of writing because the writer has not taken the time to make his or her thoughts more easily understandable to the audience although as I tell my students, when you have learned the basic conventions you can start to play with them to change the message but it must be obvious that you are in control of what you are doing or the reader is likely to be turned off and blow off what you are saying.
