But, as we all know, the modernist
movement has been having an
increasingly hard time of it in the last decade or
two. Marx, Nietzsche and
Freud, the masters of suspicion nurtured within the
bosom of modernity,
propounding their theories as 'scientific' and hence
respectable within that frame of reference, have shaken
to the core the modernist vision of reality and all
that went with it.

Worship Service(Vespers): 5pm Sunday Evening--Location: 1200 N Campbell Avenue

Subject: Discipline, creativity, and John 1
|
I just downloaded music from last Sunday evening to hear it "objectively." That was a sweet moment, playing "John 1" Sunday with the Vocal Cords Lost (so that's who we are this week?). I'm so glad that recording made it through. I feel like I *finally* did my part of Wes's beautiful song justice, although others had it down quite a while ago! And when I was playing Sunday, I wasn't only focusing on playing and singing into the mic (which I still can't believe I'm doing on a regular basis), but I was also actually actively imagining God at the same time, not easy for me, the struggling multi-tasker, to do. That moment Sunday was right up there for me with the spring of '87, when I played my best piano recital ever, one of Dvorak's Hungarian Rhapsodies, extreme piano playing that I couldn't reproduce right now to save my life. Creative experiences like these remind me of that great line from "Chariots of Fire," when Eric Liddell says of his own creativity, "God made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure." |
